A new way to teach/learn history. The Dutch Golden Age 1588-1702 video did not mention the Dutch's attempts at re-taking Taiwan. In a recently discovered not yet publicized document, the Dutch actually had entered an agreement with Shi Lang in ca 1683 to purchase Taiwan. The deal fell through, however. After that, they never really ventured outside of Java.

And of course you can post the series to your Taipics.comEyeDochttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00406602265159523372noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8811556140606524073.post-4023006751220536732014-05-14T11:41:05.929+08:002014-05-14T11:41:05.929+08:00Hello EyeDoc, I enjoyed reading this series, thank...Hello EyeDoc, I enjoyed reading this series, thank you. Here are a few related links & notes that you and others may find interesting:

Carl Sagan has an interesting documentary on the Dutch in the 1600s here. Be sure to pay attention around the 2:54 mark.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvY8dQQI13Q

Another more detailed video can be found at this link. It is a video with text which outlines the politics in the Netherlands during the Taiwan occupation years. Its also notes that the Japanese become technically successful before others due to their connection with Dutch traders. (optics, biology, etc.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNc0mDrA-zQ&list=PL935515ED758740B5

related: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Pieterszoon_Coen

The tulip bubble crash in 1637 and the expansion into New York after Henry Hudson's voyage in 1609 probably had some effect on early Taiwan history. I don't have time now to dig into this, but it has always interested me. P.S. I would like to make your 5 part Ming Trade series into a pdf and post to taipics.com if its ok with you.

best wishes,
~marc Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
